Massage and Bodywork

For Massage Therapists and Bodywork Professionals

Does anyone have any experience with pregnancy massage. I have a client that is four and a half months pregnant. I know there are pads, pillows and all kinds of things to make them more comfortable while on the table. Does anyone have any suggestions....even on techniques that work best.

Thanks in advance,
Krista

Hi Krista,

I just worked on a client today who was 4 months pregnant. Unless you visually see how big or small they are, it's hard to comment the level of comfortability for the clients. Mine was pretty small and she decided to be face down during her session.

For those who are bigger, I give the option for either sideline position or the use of the Prego Pillow. Most in their late trimester prefer the Prego Pillow. I also went to the local Babies-r-us and picked up a body contour pillow for pregnant moms and utilize that during the sideline position. Make sure there is a pillow under their heads and ankles.

Overall, they are the ones who will direct you towards their comfortability. Also, avoid the upper traps and the areas around the ankle as you may already know. Don't be scared about doing minor trigger point because they do love it. If you have any other questions, feel free to call me or email me.

of all types of Massage, this one is hardest for me to relate to especially in the later months of the third trimester. every woman carries so different from the next. all I can say is PILLOWS, PILLOWS, PILLOWS! side lying with soft comfy pillows for her head between her knees, a large pillow in front for her to wrap her arms around (bear hug) and a small pillow for the small of her back.
you probably wont need them all but have them just in case. the prego pillow is cool but once again not everyone is going to feel comfortable in it.
surprisingly firm pressure is prefered by most of my preg clients, you'd think something soft and smoothe, but just the opposite. so dont be afraid to be aggressive
